Free
3rd annual ‘MAYOR’S HEALTH CHECK DAY”, to be held Saturday, July 9th from 10 AM until 2 PM at all Albany Firehouses

Saturday, July 9 -- at the Delaware Branch Library with SummerFest.

APL celebrates summer -- and summer reading fun -- on Saturday, July 9, from 1 to 3 pm at the Delaware Branch (331 Delaware Avenue). This FREE outdoor party for the whole family features bounce houses, activities, games, music, dancing, magic, giveaways, and snacks.

SummerFest is the major event in the library's Summer Reading Program, which encourages literacy by rewarding kids for reading. The party gives children a chance to sign up for the Summer Reading Program and sample the activities and books available at the library.

The July 9 SummerFest activities include:
+ A giant bounce activity center and a kiddie bounce house
+ Roving magic show by Mr. Magicman
+ Special hip hop dance performance by students from Albany Salsa (at 2 pm)
+ Games and activities

+ Snow cones and popcorn
+ Summer snacks provided by Price Chopper

+ Special giveaways for people who sign up for the Summer Reading Program

The SummerFest party is so big that the library is closing all branches -- except for Delaware and the Main Library (161 Washington Avenue) -- on Saturday, July 9. The Delaware Avenue neighborhood is also participating in the July 9 festivities with special sales at many businesses, food and activity booths, and a garage sale.

APL's Summer Reading Program runs from June 27 to August 15. Kids and teens register and record their reading online or at any APL library. For every week they read, participants are eligible for prizes. More than 100 special events and activities are planned at the library's seven locations during the seven week program.

This year's Summer Reading Program is sponsored in part by Price Chopper, Friends of Albany Public Library, Friendly's, and Stewart's Shops.

Vote on Revised Library Budget July 19

APL has a new proposed 2012 budget that cuts 10.3 percent from the previous proposed budget that was narrowly defeated by voters in May. The new proposed spending plan decreases the budget while maintaining hours and services.
The revised budget goes to the voters on Tuesday, July 19. Polls will be open from 7 am until 9 pm that day. Voting will take place at all 18 polling locations that are traditionally used for library and school district budget votes.

If approved by voters on July 19:
+ The revised budget would cost the owner of a $150,000 home an extra $28.05 in 2012. This is $19.33 less than the previous proposed plan.

+ The estimated homestead library tax for 2012 would be $1.45 per $1,000 of assessed value. This is 13 cents lower than the previous proposed tax rate.

On July 19, voters will be asked to cast ballots on the proposed 2012 operating budget of $6,266,169, which is $717,802 less than the previous plan.
