Governor Hochul recently launched the Downtown Albany Strategy, part of the Championing Albany's Potential (CAP) Initiative, to identify actionable steps that will improve economic vibrancy, public safety, housing, and quality of life. It will focus on tangible projects and policies that align public programs and unlock private investment.
The Downtown Albany Strategy project team, led by Empire State Development (ESD) and supported by a team of consultants, will be hosting a series of focus groups the weeks of July 14 and July 21 to identify opportunities and challenges to reinvigorate commercial corridors, strengthen small businesses, promote housing growth, and revitalize underutilized real estate and open spaces.
In-person focus groups will be organized around five Downtown Albany districts:
- Arbor Hill Focus Group will be centered on opportunities for catalytic investment and redevelopment in Arbor Hill, West Hill, and along Henry Johnson Boulevard
- Central Avenue Focus Group will be centered on opportunities for catalytic investment and redevelopment around the intersection of Lark Street and Central Avenue, including along Washington Avenue, Central Avenue, and Lark Street
- Central Business District Focus Group will be centered on opportunities for catalytic investment and redevelopment in Downtown Albany’s Business Improvement District
- South End Focus Group will be centered on opportunities for catalytic investment and redevelopment along Madison Avenue and Albany’s South End
- Warehouse District Focus Group will be centered on opportunities for catalytic investment and redevelopment in Albany’s Warehouse District and North Albany neighborhoods
